Does Ear Candling Work?

ear candlingEar candling or ear coning is an alternative method used for removing the wax in the ear. It is claimed to improve the general health of the ear by lighting a hollow candle at one end and placing another end in the canal of the ear.

The process of ear candling requires the use of ear candles which are made of cotton or linen that is wound into a shape of cone and is soaked in wax and left to get hardened. The users of ear candling claims this process creates a low vacuum which draws the wax and the other debris out of the ear into the hollow candle which is left out as a dark colored waxy mass at the stub of the candle.

But there is no evidence to prove that the ear candling process is actually effective. As per the medical research ear candling is ineffective as well as dangerous. There are many possible risks involved with this procedure. The hot wax can burn the ear, skin and the hair. It can also lead to perforated ear drum and dripping of the wax into the ear which can lead to obstruction of the ear canal.

There is no need for ear candling procedure to clean and lubricate the ear as the ear has its own self cleaning system that naturally removes all the wax. There is no need for any additional cleaning procedure. Thus there is no research or evidence which can prove ear candling to be effective and safe.

One Response to “Does Ear Candling Work?”

  1. Derk says:

Ear candling is not to pull out the wax from the ear but to balance the mind and body along with the level of wax. There is no doubt that you need some wax in your ear. Ear candling is meant to naturally excrete excesive wax from the ear canal, in which your body cannot do.

When using ear candles, if you were to take and light a candle and look at the smoke through a magnafying glass you will see little pieces of wax with in the smoke. The wax coats the canal walls and dries out the ear and the wax, wich in turn will irratate the skin and cause your body to produce more oil resulting in the excessive wax to fall out with in a short amount of days.

There is no vacuume effect. the remains in the bottom of the candle iswax and residue fromthe ear candling process. Try it yourself, place a candle in a glass or jar and perform as you would any other procedure. You will still find that in the bottom is the same substance as you did from candling an ear. visual proof that there is nothing being sucked out or vacuumed out.
