Low White Blood Cell Count
White blood cells provide healthy functioning of the immune system as it helps to fight the infections and various other abnormalities in the blood, lymphatic system and bone marrow.
There are many different types of white blood cells and all of them are essential for defending the body against bacteria, virus, parasite and allergic reactions. If a person suffers from the problem of low white blood cells then he gets prone to various infections and illnesses. A low count in white blood cell also indicates serious health problems like hyperthyroidism, leukemia, infectious disease and aplastic anemia.
A low white blood cell count is a condition which is also known as leucopenia where there is a decrease in the disease fighting cells present in the body. In an adult a low count is defined at a stage where the cells are fewer than 3500 white blood cells per micro liter of the blood. In children the count differs with sex and age.
The main causes for the low count of these cells include viral infections that disrupt the function of the bone marrow, cancer or other disease that damage the bone marrow, congenital disorders, drugs that destroy these cells and others. A low count in these cells can be diagnosed through the tests done by doctor. It cannot be discovered by chance or by unexpected finding.
Since the low count in these white blood cells can make you vulnerable to various infections thus they due precautions should be taken. A face mask should be worn during this condition and person with cold or other illness should be avoided. Proper medication and due care can help to treat this problem.
