The Health Benefits of Whole Grains
For a few decades now we have been told to significantly increase our intake of whole grains because they are so high in fiber and are heart healthy food sources. However, according to the Whole Grains Council, there are a number of other benefits to our health that may not be readily apparent. Some of the benefits are well studied and documented over the years while there are numerous health related benefits that are only just coming to light. While more research is needed in those areas, there is still plenty of evidence to suggest that whole grains, may indeed, provide those benefits as well.
First of all, for the well documented benefits, it is proven that whole grains are able to promote a healthy heart because they are able to lower levels of cholesterol in the blood stream. They are proven to reduce the risk of strokes by anywhere from 30% to 36%. Whole grains promote a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes by as much as 21% to 30% and of course those high-fiber whole grains help us to maintain a healthy weight.
Recent studies also indicate that whole grains might reduce the risk of asthma, colorectal cancer, gum disease, tooth loss and inflammatory diseases. These studies also show that whole grains may provide for healthier carotid arteries while promoting healthier blood pressure. Although the Whole Grains Council believes that more research and clinical studies are needed to substantiate those claims, there are other national organizations such as the National Cancer Institute that already documents the reduced risk for colorectal cancer and other agencies are starting to follow suit.
