What Is Incontinence?

Many people have times in life when they experience periods of incontinence. Usually this afflicts women more than men, and doctors have said that the chances of suffering this malady increase proportionate to the numbers of childbirths a woman has had. But, the problem is not really specific to women alone. Men also suffer from incontinence and there are natural treatments which can prove beneficial.

The urinary system is comprised of two kidneys, two ureters, two sphincter muscles, a bladder and a urethra. They work together to filter waste products and excess fluids from the bloodstream. This waste and excess is then eliminated in the urine. There are biological “triggers” that when working efficiently signal us that the bladder needs to be emptied.

The sphincter muscles actually help to regulate the flow of urine. But there are also nerves in the bladder that signal when it needs to be emptied. The fuller the bladder becomes, the stronger the urge to urinate becomes. If any of there is a breakdown in that process and we urinate involuntarily it is referred to as incontinence.

There are natural ways to strengthen the sphincter muscles as well as to nourish the urinary system in order to keep it running efficiently. The Kegal Exercises can help to strengthen a bladder that is weak by toning muscles in the pelvis. We are also advised to shy away from beverages that act as natural diuretics. Anything with caffeine acts as a diuretic.

Sometimes there may be a need for women to have surgery if the problem is not responsive to medications. But before you go through invasive procedures, try all the natural means at your disposal.
